This past December I went to Oahu to get married! Since planning for my wedding was my priority, I didn't really plan to eat anywhere in particular. I just went with the flow and ate at places wherever my friends and family wanted to eat at. Here are some places we ate out at during our trip:
Pancakes & Waffles
On the morning of my arrival we to Pancakes & Waffles for breakfast. Its a small restaurant and was busy the day we went, luckily our food came out relatively fast!
My meal, the Mini Breakfast Special was smaller compared to everyone else's. For this special you get to choose 1) how you want your eggs cooked 2) choose pancakes, toast, fries or rice and 3) choose bacon, link sausage, Spam, or Portuguese Sausage. |
Overall this was a nice family restaurant to eat at. I wish Pancakes & Waffles was also here in Las Vegas!
Hokulani Bake Shop
My friend wanted to get cupcakes from Hokulani because they won in the Food Network's show, Cupcake Wars (season 4, episode 12).
These Hokulani cupcakes certainly tasted like winners to me! Me and my friends had a bite of each other's cupcake. The frostings weren't overpowering or doubling the size of a cupcake, they complimented each their moist cupcake.
Top- Snickerdoodle Cupcake w/ Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting, Lilikoi Cupcake w/ Cream Cheese Frosting (my personal favorite) Bottom- I forgot the left one! The right is Southern Red Velvet Cupcake w/ Cream Cheese Frosting |
Papa Ole's Kitchen
Papa Ole's was the only place I bookmarked to visit near the beach house I was staying at because there was a lot of raving reviews about this place! Even my bridesmaid heard this restaurant was really good, so we all definitely had to check this place out.
I had a Grilled Ahi (tuna) plate that came with tartar sauce, rice, and mac salad. There was a big, fresh chunk of tuna that came with the plate. I tried to finish it all, but I just gave the rest to my husband. |
My cousin had the Kalbi plate. You can tell this was slabbed with a lot of marinade! |
From what you've seen of the couple examples of food we had, if you'd like to eat authentic and ono (delicious) local food in the North Shore area, eat at Papa Ole's!
Now here's the main event, my wedding!
I thought this was cute and funny, a mother hen leaving L&L Barbeque with her chicks! |
Now here's the main event, my wedding!
A three tier Tiffany Blue cake with white sugar shells and flowers to feed about 80 people from Aloha Cakery. Me and my husband chose the flavors (Chocolate Kahlua Fudge, Strawberry, and Vanilla) and fillings (guava and lilikoi) for each tier. It was great doing business with the owner, Kathy! Along with its lovely look, my cake was so good that my guests demolished the cake :D |
A pūpū (appetizer) platter consisting of spicy edamame, spicy chicken wings, cream puffs, cake pops, fruits, cheese, chips with salsa, and cupcakes! |
Time to eat! |
It wasn't hard for me to choose a caterer. I really wanted to eat food from Marujyu Market again! I ordered mostly the same foods that I ate in 2009. I also ordered Pulehu Steak, Chicken Adobo, and Basa Fish (it's sauce was incredible!). Everything tasted great! I'm so glad I was able to eat their food again. |
Palm Terrace at Turtle Bay Resort
When we were at Turtle Bay after the wedding, one of my husband's old classmates happened to be checking us in! He hooked us up with a free breakfast, how nice!
The breakfast buffet was quite big with a lot of foods to choose from. There was the typical continental breakfast items like scrambled eggs, bacon, waffles, pancakes, omelette station, cereals, yogurt, etc. One of my favorites was the Chicken Apple Sausage, it should be a standard item in every continental breakfast! Even though there were a lot of typical items, all the foods I had tasted fresh, especially their fruits and fruit juices!
There was also a miso soup station, you get to choose the toppings for your soup like tofu, green onions, and seaweed.
What a great breakfast! |
We of course had to eat at Zippy's - only in Hawaii! |
Like Like Drive Inn
After karaoking all night, we were hungry. Luckily Like Like was nearby and open 24/7. Like Like is like a diner that serves local and American food.
My friend had a big bowl of Loco Moco- rice with meat patties, gravy, and fried egg on top. |
The Filet Mignon with Mushroom Gravy sounded really good on the menu, so I had to get it! It was worth the $18. The Filet Mignon was quite tender and I love the bunch of rice that came with it! |
Shopping at Sack N Save. I wish these items were also in grocery markets here in the mainland! |
I heart Spam |
Rainbow Drive-In
We brought our friends (it was their first time visiting HI) to the famous Rainbow Drive-In. It was packed on a weekday, but the wait was worth it!
Like the other places I mentioned, Rainbow has a lot of local dishes to choose from, you won't be disappointed!
The Curry Stew Special with beef and chunks of veggies. One of the best curries I've had! I also had a vanilla Ice Cream Cone. It was refreshing to eat it on a warm day. |
Overall my foodie trip to Hawaii was awesome as usual. I miss it and can't wait to come back to da aina again :)
